Katie from Melbourne landed a Trust and Safety job in New York on an E-3 Visa!

Katie was a Supercharge Your Search Student 💫

At Aussie Recruit we’re always excited to share the success stories of fellow Australians landing jobs in the US. Katie is a true job-search warrior with so many incredible tips. She is an inspiration and we’re thrilled to share some of her story with you.

First, let’s talk a bit about Katie and what sparked her interest in moving to the US.

Katie is originally from Melbourne and always wanted to live abroad for both a personal and professional challenge. She loved her time traveling in the US and decided the US was for her.

Katie’s professional background was in public policy and operational intelligence in law enforcement in Australia. She focused on transitioning into the tech sector into a trust and safety role. “Given the US is a tech hub it seemed like the best place to move to!” says Katie.

Katie has 3 important messages about MINDSET when it comes to finding a job in the US.

  1. When you first start job-searching, prepare yourself for a search that may be more difficult or time consuming than anticipated. This will help to set your expectations and to acknowledge that it’s often very hard for Australians to get jobs in the US.

  2. During the interview phase, focus on building up your stamina. Recruitment processes in the US can be very long. An interview process with 4-6 rounds (perhaps even more) is fairly standard in the US. During the final stages of the interviews, or if you get rejected at the end, make sure to remind yourself of your value.

  3. Above all, approach your job search with an open mindset - the right job may not be the one you expected.

Katie shared 7 ways that she kept motivated during her US job search.

  • Spoke with mentors

  • Expanded her network to gather diverse guidance

  • Tuned into success stories

  • Remained aware of but not consumed by articles discussing challenges in the job market

  • Took days off LinkedIn

  • Allowed herself a day to decompress after receiving a rejection

  • Wrote diary entries to process challenges

We’re happy to share that Katie was a Supercharge Your Search student!

Katie shares “The Aussie Recruit Supercharge Your Search was a game changer in more ways than one. The course provided tangible and practical steps to not only build confidence in the job search but to see results. I walked away with a stronger Linkedin presence, diverse network and countless referrals! Highly recommend Supercharge Your Search and Aussie Recruit more broadly.”

Katie expressed her gratitude to Amy Meyer (Aussie Recruit’s Founder) saying “on a personal level Amy has been incredibly supportive and responsive and is such a wealth of knowledge in the transition to the job market in the US, which can feel alien and unknown.”

Last but not least we asked Katie “What do you think you'll miss most about Australia?”

“Beaches and sounds of the birds” says Katie.
